St Mary’s Cambridge
A major part of the Young Helpers' Group are the girls who
come from St Mary's School in Cambridge.
St Mary's was founded in 1898 after the Bishop of Northampton gave permission for the nuns of York to build in Cambridge. Originally St Mary's was founded to be a hostel for young girls who wanted to train as teachers. However with lack of support from the Cambridge authorities the hostel never took off and seemed as though it was going to be doomed to fail. Nevertheless an idea was planted and St Mary's admitted two young children called Dorothy and Daisy Moore.
The school was born. The school now has over 300 pupils and remains a girls
school.
Mr Paul Mallabone is the current teacher incharge of bringing
pupils from St Mary's. A large display is always on show, as below.
