The Crypt

Work of construction on this chapel started in 1866 and it was the first chapel to be built in response to the request of Our Lady to Bernadette "Go, tell the priests to have a chapel built here". The Crypt was blessed and opened on 19th May 1866 by Mgr Laurence, Bishop of Tarbes in the presence Bernadette.

The walls of the long corridor entrance are covered by votive offerings. The chapel has 5 side-altars finished with beautiful mosaics and fine stained glass windows.

These altars are dedicated to St Peter Sacred Heart, The Blessed Virgin, St Joseph (containing the relic of St. Bernadette), and St John the Evangelist directly above the Grotto.

The walls are again decorated with votive offerings in thanksgiving to God for graces received through the intercession of Our Lady.
